Nebraska-based fine artist Cindy Chinn carves detailed sculptures out of pencils. For this scene of a family of elephants walking across the Serengeti, Chinn bought herself a 10x diopter floor lamp and a 90x Trinocular on an arm (kinda like the equipment you’d see at a dentist’s office). Few cities have undergone radical urban transformation like Shenzhen. Designated as China’s first Special Economic Zone in 1980, this market town of 30,000 people experienced an explosive population increase to 10,000,000 inhabitants over the last 30 years. Shenzhen’s powerful economic status drove massive building projects across the city; new architecture seemingly emerged overnight, continuously reshaping the city’s identity. Today, Shenzhen stands as one of the fastest growing cities in history, as well as a global financial and trade hub that holds one of the world’s busiest container ports.
